kat perkoff
Ellen became lovers and roommates with bartender and poet Kat Perkoff. Their relationship was going well, until Ellen discovered that Kat was cheating on her. She moved out of their apartment in order to “teach her a lesson.” (Ellen Degeneres. Biography) They ran into eachother later in a club. When Kat asked Ellen when she was coming home, Ellen pretended not to hear her over the music. Kat was killed in a car accident shortly later. (Ellen Degeneres. Biography)
Ellen’s grief over Kat’s death led her to ask God why a wonderful person like Kat could be taken so soon, while fleas were allowed to roam her run-down apartment. The dialogue she imagined between herself and God soon developed into an idea for a sketch called “Phone Call to God.” (Ellen Degeneres. Biography)
